It is the aim of the CHANGE-MRI study to investigate whether the radiation-free MRI, in direct comparison with the VQ scan for the diagnosis of CTEPH, is its equivalent, so that the MRI can, in future, also be offered as part of the clinical routine. Replacing the VQ scan with the MRI may in the end contribute to the reduction of radiation exposure of patients with pulmonary hypertension as well as the general population.

The study procedure will be incorporated into the stay as an inpatient to investigate pulmonary hypertension, so that the study participants incur no noticeable additional stress or inconvenience. A VQ scan will be carried out as part of the routine clinical investigation. In addition, for the CHANGE-MRI scientific study, an MRI test will be carried out before the VQ scan according to valid and standardized protocols. The MRI scan takes about 45 minutes. In one part of this, whilst a continuous flow of images are being taken, a contrast medium will be administered, which will show the pulmonary circulation in the whole lung tissue.

The study participants will undergo an examination of their lungs using the latest technology. The images will be evaluated by experienced thorax radiologists, not only for study purposes but also to identify pathological findings possibly previously undetected.

All additional diagnostic information that is important for the study participants will be communicated to their treating physician so that this can also be included in their individual therapy recommendation, thus possibly providing each study participant with personal benefit from this examination.
